About the Project

Inspired by a Creative Childhood and A Community at Risk

The protector is inspired by the writer's childhood growing up on the South Side of Chicago and working in her parents convenience store in a time where gentrification and eminent domain were real threats to the community. The store hosted such a wide variety of characters in and out and is a unique and special part of the 1980s. The script also highlights the writer's childhood love of martial arts and Bruce Lee. Much like the rappers of Wu-tang Clan and countless other children of the 70's, she grew up watching "Samurai Sunday " the Sunday afternoon segment on her local station of several martial art focused films every weekend. She idolizing the actors and stories of that time and dreamed herself a samurai master with a unique connection to Bruce Lee himself. An active imagination and no training at all, made for a ton of fun afternoons for this parents and this unique story.
